Om en nå engang skal ha en blogg er dagen i dag en fornuftig dag å ta den i bruk. I dag markerer en drøss internettbrukere «The Day We Fight Back against mass surveillance», eller også «Dagen da vi står opp mot masseovervåkning».
Som det heter i pressemeldingen:
A broad coalition of activist groups, companies, and online platforms will hold a worldwide day of activism in opposition to the NSA’s mass spying regime on February 11th. Dubbed «The Day We Fight Back», the day of activism was announced on the eve of the anniversary of the tragic passing of activist and technologist Aaron Swartz. The protest is both in his honor and in celebration of the victory over the Stop Online Piracy Act two years ago this month, which he helped spur.
Bakgrunnen er altså internettaktivisten Aaron Swartz‘ tragiske selvmord i januar i fjor, et selvmord begått mens Swartz sto midt oppe i en rettsak hvor han lå an til å få flere år i fengsel og bøter i millionklassen for å ha lastet ned og distribuert akademiske artikler fra databasen JSTOR.
Men motivasjonen er også å finne i varsleren Edward Snowdens massive lekkasjer av etteretningsmateriale fra amerikanske NSA og britiske GCHQ og etteretningsorganisasjonenes uttalte mål om å bli «herre over internett», et mål som skal sikres bl.a. med hjelp av Microsoft, Apple, Google, Facebook, Dropbox og storstilt inngripen i datasettene disse leverandørene har på verdens befolkning, inkludert egne innbyggere ((i følge Luke Hardings bok Snowden-filene fra 2014)) .
